Looking for an easy way to add color and rustic charm to your next outdoor dinner party? Read below to learn to make these easy mosaic air dry coasters.
I adore mosaic art because it’s unique. I wanted to create something that is perfect for sitting on my apartment balcony that I can enjoy with guests on a Summer evening. Although I won’t be sitting European seaside this Summer, why not create some Mediterranean charm for my home? These easy coasters are customizable and perfect to make on a craft night! I also think they would make a great gift with a bottle of wine or a fancy soda.
How to Make an Easy Mosaic and Air Dry Clay Coaster for Summer
Materials
- Air Dry Clay
- Clay Sculpting Tools
- Rolling Pin
- Paint
- Mosaic Beads
- Finishing Serum
- Mod Podge
- Paint brush
- Sand Paper
- Stencil
Step 1:
Find a flat clean surface to work and acquire clay, tools, rolling pin, stencil, paper towel/ sponge, and water. Grab a large chunk of clay and roll flat to a thickness that you would like for your coasters
Step 2:
Next place your stencil on top of the flattened clay and use your tool to trace out your coaster shape. Make sure the shape is large enough to fit your glasses and mugs. It may look a little rough around the edges after tracing the coaster shape.
Step 3:
Dip a paper towel or sponge into water lightly. It’s important not to add to much water to your clay as it will cause cracking. Next go around the rough edges with the damp paper towel/ sponge to smooth edges.
Step 4:
Repeat steps 1-3 for as many coasters as you would like. After the coasters are shaped, leave them to dry undisturbed. This takes about 48 hours.
Step 5:
Now the fun part! Grab Mod Podge, mosaics, paint, and paint sealer. I chose to leave the coaster as is and not paint it. However, I was toying with painting the coasters a fun bright Summer color. After you paint the coaster, or keep coaster the clay color, leave to dry.
Step 6:
I always suggest laying out the mosaic pieces first to get an idea of how you want the coaster to look before using glue. After you are happy with your design you can use mod podge to glue each mosaic piece. I chose to make a ring around the coaster with alternating size pieces.
Step 7
After the glue has dried, make sure the mosaic pieces are secure to the coaster. If they are not secure add more glue to the loose mosaic pieces. Once the pieces are secure you can cover the entire coaster with the paint finisher. This is to ensure the pieces won’t become loose. Also, this adds a gloss to finish and protect the coaster. Please note I would not place this in a dishwasher. I suggest spot cleaning any spills to avoid damage to the coaster.
Step 8
Once the coaster is fully dried, pour yourself your favorite drink. Now, enjoy your drink on your new mosaic coaster. What color mosaics would you use for your coasters?
